Summary
Troop was my final year uni project that landed me with job with Spalk. As an international student in NZ, I struggle to find the ideal flat. Flatting culture is huge in NZ and to fit among the group is not easy. There are not many platforms in NZ to find the ideal flatmates. This is me trying to solve a problem I faced myself and are currently still facing by many others.

THE BEGINNING

I took one of my personal experience which I faced in finding accommodation and is a common problem in Auckland as my capstone project. I found that it is very hard to find accommodation in Auckland especially for students. There is a huge accommodation pressure for students and the people living in Auckland in terms of both availability and price, flatting behaviour and a desperate shortage of accommodation at the moment. In order to find a solution for the problem, my research was to find an effective service to solve the problem and ease the availability of accommodation and flatting behaviours. The best service I implemented was a mobile application that will ease the search of accommodation in Auckland with other features to make it more user friendly. This being a personal project, I was able to easily find a way to address and solve the problem.

THE STRUGGLE

I moved 3 houses in under a year time in NZ because of flat and flatmate issues. There were cross-cultural issues, communication problems and so on. Finding the right place was a struggle. There were lots of ad for flatmates but to communicate and setup viewings were really hard.

SOLUTION - TROOP

With lots of research and interviews, I came up with a mobile app as the right solution for finding the ideal flatmates. A common interest filter was implemented to refine ideal flats and the best results. Features like video ad, group chats etc makes it easy to under the flat culture.

Learnings

Understanding user needs:
User personas can help you gain a better understanding of the needs and goals of different types of users. By analyzing the information collected about each persona, you can identify common pain points, preferences, and expectations, and use this information to guide your design decisions.
